William Penn is a very important person to the Pennsylvania Colony. He was born October 14, 1644 and founded the Pennsylvania Colony in 1682. He is a Quaker and founded Pennsylvania for religious freedom. He also helped to create Pennsylvania's government. While in England, he was the leading defender of religious toleration which landed him in jail six times. He also freed many Quakers from jail and brought them to the New World.
Benjamin Franklin was also a very important person in the PA colony. He was born on January 17, 1706 in Boston. He later ran away from Boston to Pennsylvania. He started off owning his own newspaper, the Pennsylvania Gazette, and he created the first political cartoons. In 1736 he created the first fire station called the Philadelphia Union Fire Company. In 1751 he created the first hospital called the Pennsylvania Hospital. Soon after he discovered electricity. When he went to England, he was a colonial representative for Pennsylvania, Georgia, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. He later returned and proposed the idea for united colonies in 1754. He was elected to the Second Continental Congress, a committee of five, who worked to draft the Declaration of Independence.
